Day 1 PALERMO
Arrival at airport in Palermo. Meeting with driver and transfer to the hotel in Palermo area, accommodation and overnight.
Day 2 SEGESTA – ERICE – MARSALA
After breakfast, departure to Segesta the Elemi’s town, built on a desert hill, probably between the fifth and fourth centuries BC, to control its territories. Visit to the Doric Temple. Possibility to visit the Greek theater reachable by a shuttle. Then continue to Erice, a small medieval town perched on Mount Erice overlooking the city of Trapani, its port, salt marshes features and Egadi islands … and the sea, a unique view! The old town, surrounded by ramparts, consisting of a maze of winding streets with incomparable charm is dominated by the castle of Venus (outside), built on an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess of love. Free time to visit the beautiful “Chiesa Madre”, the Gothic cathedral and stroll through the medieval alleys. Tasting almond pastries (with supplement) before leaving for Marsala through “the salt road” that allows the view of the famous salt pans. Marsala is known all over the world thanks to the wine production valued by the British at the end of the 1700s. Visit a historic winery with a wine tasting.
Return to Palermo and overnight at the hotel.
Day 3 PALERMO – MONREALE
After breakfast, walking tour of Palermo the capital of Sicily, to visit the historical center with the main monuments (Cathedral, Palatine Chapel in the Royal Palace or Norman Palace, The Martorana church,) together with the tasting of typical street food products of which Palermo is among the most renowned cities in the world. The itinerary includes stops to taste the renowned Palermitan street food unknown to mass tourism. All without forgetting the artistic and monumental riches they have classified this UNESCO heritage city, with the Arab-Norman route.
Continue to Monreale for the visit of its splendid Cathedral covered of golden mosaics, the most extended in the world after Santa Sofia in Istanbul and San Marco in Venice. Visit to the next Benedictine Cloister (UNESCO heritage). In the afternoon, departure to Agrigento, overnight at hotel.
Day 4 AGRIGENTO – PIAZZA ARMERINA – CALTAGIRONE – RAGUSA
After breakfast visit of the magnificent Valley of Temples, erected by the Greeks during the 5th century BC. A pleasant walk through the valley will reveal, one after the other, the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Concord, the Temple of Hercules, and so on, designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Continue to Piazza Armerina to visit the marvelous “Villa Romana del Casale” with its perfectly preserved mosaics depicting mythological themes and hunting scenes (UNESCO heritage). Then departure to Caltagirone, known for producing artistic ceramics, which dominates shops (with dishes, vases, etc.). but it embellishes bridges, balustrades, facades and balconies. Everything is born of the wealth of mud in the area. The ease of finding this material drives the creation of terracotta artifacts, especially vases. In this area, the art is as old as the origins of the city. Short stop to admire the famous staircase of Santa Maria. Proceed to Ragusa area, overnight.
Day 5 RAGUSA – IBLA – MODICA – SYRACUSE – CATANIA
Departure to Ragusa-Ibla which represents the final blossoming of Baroque art in Europe. Ragusa and Modica (UNESCO Heritage) were destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1693. This earthquake radically changed the topography of Sicily as all the cities were rebuilt according to the new principles of later Baroque. Visit to Ragusa Ibla, very charming and rich in history with its baroque buildings and medieval memories. The Cathedral of Modica is a jewel to admire. Tasting of the famous Modica chocolate made with ancient traditional recipes. Departure to Syracuse (UNESCO heritage) to visit the wonderful archaeological area including the famous “Latomie del Paradiso”, the Dionysius “Ear”, the Greek Roman theater and the amphitheater. Lunch in a local restaurant in the island of Ortigia, original center of the Corinthian founders of the city, treasure of baroque art. In the afternoon visit of Ortigia with its Cathedral built upon the site of the Temple of Minerva, the legendary Arethuse Fountain and the Temple of Apollo. Lunch on your own. Time at leisure in Ortrigia and later in the afternoon transfer to your hotel in Catania area and overnight.
Day 6 ETNA – TAORMINA
After breakfast, departure to Mount Etna, the highest still active European volcano (3.345 meters) and UNESCO heritage: the coach will arrive up to “Rifugio Sapienza” at about 1.800 meters. Free visit of the famous Silvestri Craters, now extinct. Along the route, it is possible to admire a wonderful variety of landscapes. Over the centuries, the volcano has created a place where nature, culture and history merge to create a unique place in the world. Climb up to 2.900 meters by cable car and a 4×4 coach. After returning to 1.800 m., Possibility to have a lunch in a farmhouse with wine tasting and local products (with supplement). Then, proceed to Taormina, a pretty and romantic town. Free time to visit the famous Greek Theatre with a splendid view of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea or to do some shopping in the picturesque lanes of the city center. Return to the hotel and overnight.
Day 7 CATANIA
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer from hotel to Catania airport . END OF TOUR.
